Hi folks. My name is Ian Fullbrook and I’ve just started to take a few tentative steps on the stand up comedy road.
How did all this start. Well I’ve always been able to do impersonations of famous people, right from the age of about 15, but never took it seriously enough. I just impersonated a few people in amongst friends and that’s all it was, fun. But all of a sudden, at the age of 47, I’ve actually found something I’m not too bad at.
I volunteer in the mental health field and have been struggling for years with anxiety and depression. I also have Autism Spectrum Disorder, and always shied away from standing in front of audiences to talk about anything.
Four years or so ago, one of the places I volunteer at trained me and several others in the art of public speaking. From being a nervous Nellie, I am now much more proficient and assured. Other anxieties often crop up and I do have a self critical voice that tells me I’m not good enough to do certain things.
A few months back, I did a short video, just as a laugh, impersonating current UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. I showed this to one of my colleagues, who passed it onto her partner, who is a stand up comic. Amazingly, he liked it and suggested I do a seven minute act (more of which in the next blog post) at an upcoming comedy night.
I was absolutely taken aback by this news! Cripes! How am I going to go about this? Read on in the next blog post….always leave the audience wanting more!
Yours in comedy,
Ian L. Fullbrook
