One hat I wear is Deputy Secretary of the Essex branch of cricket umpires and scorers, part of the national association.

One of my good friends and colleagues is Secretary, and I assist him with admin duties and contributions to the meetings. We had a meeting last week, and it’s my job to jot down the minutes and type up the report of the meeting.

Not earth shatteringly exciting I admit, but it does perform a very important personal function. My well-being. It’s been been thrown hither and yon the last month or so. But as I said yesterday, it’s fightback week. Did some admin yesterday and got a few things sorted. Today, I settled down with a cup of coffee and got on with getting these minutes typed up. Bar a couple of minor spelling mistakes, I’m quite proud of the finished product. Though fairly insignificant in the grander scheme of things, it’s important that I give something like this my full concentration.

And it lifts my mood, my optimism and my outlook. From being plunged headlong into disaster the other day, I’m having to scramble again to hit back hard. And I’m doing so. And I’ll continue being a Deputy for as long as I’m required. Being made to feel as I’m contributing to something worthwhile is a good enough reason to continue in the role.

A good couple of days so far…..
