During the summer, an umpiring colleague gave me a call, quite unexpectedly. “What are you doing in October?” he asked curiously. My reply was that I didn’t know this far out, but then my attention was fully on as to what he said next…..
“Essex Over 60s are looking for a scorer for their…..trip to Portugal in October. Are you interested?” Yes, I am interested!! He explained what was likely to happen and now, in late September, the countdown is beginning to Wednesday week, when I’ll be jetting off to Porto for some late opportunities to top up the tan and to partake in some good old socialising.
I haven’t been on a cricket tour for many years, and though I’ve been to some European destinations, Portugal is off the list until now. Just cannot wait to get there. The guy I mentioned in the first part of the post will be umpiring, I’ll be scoring and a few other blokes I know will be part of the touring party.
The excitement and trepidation started yesterday and even the butterflies are starting as I type. I’ve never been abroad for cricket purposes so this is a marvellous opportunity. It’s only a short flight to Porto and I’m going to enjoy every second of it. Ever since that phone call in the summer, I’ve been counting down the days.
7 days away……..and another place off the European destination list. Can’t wait!
