Dangerous…..

Much as we all like a good summer with heat, sunshine and long daylight hours, the heat can become dangerous, as two events happening around the world are proving.

Greece has seen devastating wildfires caused by high temperatures and a prolonged drought, and sadly it’s led to 74 people losing their lives. I’m watching the scenes of disaster on the news now, and it’s an indication of the ferocity and relentlessness of Mother Nature.

Elsewhere, Japan has been going through a prolonged heatwave, with temperatures over the Century mark, and this has caused up to 50 deaths. And in the Arctic Circle, temperatures are at record levels, leading to wildfires in Finland, Norway and Sweden.

And back here in the UK of course, the National Health Service has issued an Amber alert for heat related illnesses. This unprecedented level of extreme temperatures has triggered this alert, and I must stress that doesn’t happen that often in the UK. I must confess to feeling rather unwell the last two days, though sinking a pint of water before bed last night has mitigated against any illness today.

And that’s the advice. Stay out of the sun, cover up and drink plenty of water to rehydrate. We’re so not used to this in the UK. But the thing is, come October and November when it’ll get cold, we were all be moaning about it. Never happy us Brits. Have to moan about something.

Stay safe
