(Picture shows 38 Celsius on 3/8/18 around Cambridgeshire, West Norfolk and Lincolnshire. Even London makes it to 35 Celsius!)
3rd August 1990. Why have I mentioned this? Well, I was on holiday on this day in Eastbourne. People were jumping in the English Channel to cool off on what was, until 15 years ago, the hottest day ever recorded in the UK. Though I was near the sea, the heat was extraordinary that day. You could have fried an egg on the pavement.
Fast forward to 3rd August 2018. The predicted high temperatures for next weekend have been moderated but even so it will be hot and oppressive, like today in London for example. There’s not a breath of wind out there and a cloudy day is trapping the warmth in. But back to 3rd August.
That could be the record breaking day. It could be the one. The hottest ever day in the UK. The bookmakers have reduced the odds on the temperatures clearing 100 Fahrenheit or 38 Celsius. Record breaking but dangerous levels of heat. If you don’t have to go out in it, don’t. Stay indoors and get the air con on. This might not be seen again in my lifetime…..but who knows?
