Emergency Service…

Morning. Well today has seen an unexpected development. Cricket umpiring has been off the menu for me, because of ill health and because of feeling disenchanted with actually going out there and doing the job. Also, there’s that feeling of trying not to make a fool of myself. It’s the club’s cricket week this week, and I did a bit of scoring yesterday. I was looking forward to doing some volunteering for the national mental health charity I’m involved with, when after a series of phone calls, one of the appointed umpires has dropped out today and I’ve stepped into the breach. Not overly happy about doing so, but the other umpire would have been left on his own, so I reluctantly agreed to umpire today. Mad scramble this morning to find my kit, which has been lying in the cupboard since last June, all the equipment I use has gathered dust and the clothes likewise. So I’m now ready. The volunteering has been put on the back burner for another day this week, just to help the cricket club out. There’ll be few problems with the game today, as I’ll know quite a few players. But those nagging doubts will still be there. How will I perform? I’m very out of practice, so we’ll see. Thankfully the weather has cooled down and it’s overcast today, so I won’t be exhausted come 7 pm this evening, I hope. Now that I’ve found my stuff, I’m actually looking forward to the match. I’m sure it will be fine……and I have an excellent colleague to stand with. We’ve known each other for many years, but this is the first time we’ve umpired together. I think this will be good.A.S.D Brooks
