As you know, I love cricket. Have done since the age of 5 or 6. Long time!
Yesterday, I didn’t go and perform scoring duties due to some logistical problems with transport to a far away venue. So I decided to watch the senior team play at home with an umpiring colleague of mine.
When we arrived, the game was beautifully poised. I said “This will be an exciting finish”. There were lots of people around the ground, the atmosphere was vibrant and we were in for some fun.
And so it proved. Everybody’s attention was glued to the action as the match came down to it’s denouement. The final ball needed to go for two runs so the team would win. Unfortunately, the ball hit the wicket and the batsman was out. But what great entertainment over the previous 90 minutes. The applause that rang out for both sides was warm and genuine, and I was glad to be there, being involved as a spectator, rather than as an umpire or scorer.
Fantastic. Great for the soul, great for the personal well being. Cricket has been part of my life for so many years. Though I’ve fallen out of love with umpiring, I haven’t fallen out of love with the game itself. Look forward to witnessing many more exciting games like yesterday’s!!
